To the north of Colombo lies Negombo, a busting fishing town with golden beaches and a pallet of colour provided by sails and boats against the deep blue of the ocean. Galle city in the south of the island is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Europeanarchitectural styles and south Asian traditions. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Unawatuna is a sleepy peaceful cove with deep still water and a temple overlooking the bay from the protecting cliffs.
