Muro, Petra, Bonany and Playa de Muro photos
The peaceful and pretty agricultural town of Muro lies close to the Parc Natural de S'Albufera. It boasts one of the finest Mallorcan arcaded churches on the island (16th century Sant Joan Baptista) and also has an interesting museum located in an old mansion house, built around a courtyard and garden - the ethnology section of the Museu de Mallorca has a large collection of traditional tools, costumes, pottery and some workshops. Muro is full of grand old houses, built by rich Mallorcan landowners. Between the towns of Can Picafort and Alcudia there is a beach resort called Playa de Muro, which is a nice coastal resort with a beautiful six kilometre long white sandy beach that is great for water sport enthusiasts. Petra is a sleepy traditional rural town in central Mallorca that has been declared Property of Cultural Interest. It is famous for beeing the birthplace of Mallorca's most famous son, Fray Junipero Serra. Born in 1713 he became a priest in 1730 and worked as a missionary in Mexico from 1749 to 1763. At the age of 54 he was sent to California; the missions he established there grew into some of the USA's largest cities including San Diego and San Francisco. The Church of Saint Peter, the Convent of San Bernardino, and the Sanctuary for the Bonany Virgen are some of the most important sights there.
